The Moment That Started It All
Last night, I woke up suddenly and realized I was in our little one’s bed. I had jumped in because she’d woken up crying and wanted to climb into ours which seems to be her new routine lately. I woke up from a dream, and though I don’t remember all the details, someone in the dream said:
“You keep trusting God, and He will get you there.”
When I opened my eyes, my mind went straight to our littlest, how she still wasn’t sleeping through the night, how she gets fussy when you refuse to give her something, how she throws herself on the floor crying, and all the other things that come with toddlerhood.
I got out of her bed and walked to the bathroom, still deep in thought. My mind wandered to the struggles of our second, and even our first. I remembered the prayers I had prayed over our second, especially since I didn’t know any better with our first. And I remembered how, with our littlest, I had sought God for His word on almost everything concerning her.
Even down to the moment I went into labour, it was by His promise, a testimony I will share maybe one day.
The Word That Carried Me Through Breastfeeding
I’m not usually an over‑supplier, and I struggled a lot with breastfeeding my first two. So for our littlest, I sought the Lord about it in prayer, and He led me to 1 Chronicles 28:20. Also David told Solomon his son, Be strong and courageous, and do it. Fear not, be not dismayed, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail or forsake you until you have finished all the work for the service of the house of the Lord. And since He keeps his word, He led me to advice, foods, and lifestyle changes that helped increase my supply.
I remember another time being worried she wasn’t gaining weight at the average rate. She felt light to me when I carried her and it seemed like my milk was not enough for her. This one day as I studied the book of Job, I landed on Job 39:1-4, which talks about how God in his greatness watches over the young in the wild to ensure they are born safely, they are fed and they thrive. So if he does that for animals, how much more my baby? I turned that into a prayer which I spoke over her right up to her well baby appointment.
When she was weighed and measured, she was thriving.
Crazy, right? But that’s the word of God.
His powerful word upholds the entire universe (Hebrews 1:3). He says the word that goes forth from His mouth will not return void, it will accomplish what He pleases (Isaiah 55:11). He says His word is like fire and like a hammer that breaks rock into pieces (Jeremiah 23:29).
I went to the Lord countless times… But then I stopped.
When I Started Picking and Choosing
I began picking and choosing what I took to Him and what I decided to carry myself, because of years of experience with my other two, or confidence from articles I’d read, or research, or stories from other moms.
I took only the big things to God.
The small things? I could manage those myself.
But the trouble is: Small things multiply into big things. And the enemy knows that.
If God warns us not to minimize small beginnings (Zechariah 4:10) because even the smallest thing with His backing becomes mighty, then of course the enemy, as a counterfeit, will use small distractions, small compromises, small sins, small self‑dependencies… and multiply them.
Slowly, slowly turning us into people who are self‑reliant rather than God‑dependent.
The Scripture That Confronted Me
Proverbs 3:5–6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; Do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, And He will show you which path to take.
Not just some things, Brenda. Everything.
Children. Spouse. Children’s schools. Careers. Church. Meal plans. Recipes. Sleep schedules. Household routines. Children’s destinies. Absolutely everything.
So then… what happened to me? How did I get here?
Was it busyness? Fear of disappointment? Love for comfort and ease? The easy access to information that made me Google solutions instead of seeking the One with the blueprint?
He says I am the branch and He is the vine. The vine is the source. The branch cannot exist without the vine (John 15:1–8).
How did I get out of God’s original design?
When I started depending on experience. When I started trusting knowledge. When I leaned on articles, science, stories, instead of the Holy Spirit, my Helper, my Counselor, my Guide.
He says, “Without Me, you can do nothing.”
The 3:33 a.m. Invitation
I left the bathroom and returned to my spacious bed, oh, my great comfortable bed, not the little one this time, haha.
I looked at my phone. It was 3:33 a.m.
I have this habit of matching the time on the clock to a verse. It’s my way of listening for what God might be saying in that moment. So I opened my Bible app and read:
Jeremiah 33:3 MSG “Call to me, and I will answer you. I’ll tell you marvelous and wondrous things that you could never figure out on your own.”
I couldn’t help but smile. It felt like an open check from my Father. An invitation to ask Him about anything and everything so I wouldn’t have to figure it out alone.
I lay on my pillow, looking up, and began pouring out to him everything, about myself, my spouse, our children. All the things I had carried for so long.
I even told Him about my mummy pooch, which is getting out of hand 🙈😊.
One by one, I poured out the small things and the big things before my Father.
And then… the peace of the Lord, the one that surpasses all understanding began to return to my heart.
I felt lighter. And lighter. And soon, I drifted off to sleep.
Let’s Pray
Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us beyond what we can comprehend. Thank You for Your word that is true and alive, that burns like fire and crushes our strongest obstacles into pieces. Thank You that this powerful word is available to us. Help us remember that You who created the mouth also speak, and that You desire to be part of our everyday lives and decisions. Teach us to depend on Your counsel and guidance in every aspect of our lives. Amen.
